How Laser Hair Removal Works

How Laser Hair Removal Works

To understand why laser hair removal is not safe for pregnant and lactating women, it is best to know how it works. Whereas other shaving methods remove hair from just the surface of the skin, laser hair removal penetrates deeper into the hair follicles stopping any further hair regrowth and regeneration.

This it does by using light beams concentrated enough to target and destroys the hair follicles. Laser beams take the dark hair pigments through thermal destruction, removing and damaging any excessive hair on and under the skin.

How Long Laser Treatments Take

The number of laser treatments varies from person to person and the kind of device you choose to use for the process. On average, the treatments take anything from six months to two years. Other factors that determine the amount of time it takes are number of sessions, rate at which hair grows and hair constitution.

For anyone to see the progress of the treatments, technicians recommend six laser sessions. After the first six months, repeat treatments every six weeks help to clear all traces of hair on the skin. Going for further treatments after every 6 weeks does not give you the assurance that all the hair will disappear and for this reason, you may need another treatment session.

Is Laser Hair Removal Effective?

For people with dark coarse hair that they need to get rid of permanently, using laser hair removal is the most effective procedure in the market today. One of the side effects though is that with continued sessions, hair darkness may reduce. Other things that may change are the hair texture and morph.

Why It Is Not Safe To Have Laser Hair Removal While Pregnant

Laser Hair Removal & Pregnanc

There are many concerns for using laser hair removal while pregnant. While there are no established facts that the procedure is risky, there are reasons that support the claims that laser sessions are not the best for pregnant and lactating women.

Time it takes

One of the things you need to understand is that the sessions take anything from six months well over one year, which means that during the last stages of your pregnancy, you would have to go through the treatments. During the last stages of pregnancy, it may not be possible for the body to stay in a convenient position for the treatments.

Moving around during this stage is also not as easy as it is in the early stages or in women that are not pregnant. Skin sensitivity also goes high during pregnancy and this could lead to discomfort and irritation during the laser treatments.

Swellings

Some of the most sensitive parts of the body such as the skin around the breasts and the bikini area could end up with irritation, swellings and redness during the treatment.

Cramps

The laser treatment could also induce cramps because of the strength of the laser rays, which in turn could turn the treatment into a painful procedure.

Melanin production

During pregnancy, the body releases an excessive production of melanin, which leads to darkening of the skin. This makes the skin become more sensitive, which in turn makes the treatments more painful.

Shorter growth cycle duration

Spacing of laser treatments in between hair regrowth is necessary. With the increase in hormone levels while pregnant, internal changes in the body system can lead to faster growth of hair than before pregnancy, which makes it harder for effective laser treatment procedures.

Absorption of radiation and creams into the body

In majority of laser hair removal treatments, it is highly recommended that using a numbing cream is essential to lessen the pain. The body absorbs the numbing cream, which in turn could harm the baby.

Even though radiation from the laser treatment devices is not harmful to the body system, the areas surrounding the target areas could absorb some of it, which could create a negative impact on the unborn baby.

Wrapping it up

As much as any pregnant woman would want to look good without any excess hair on their body, it would be advisable to go for alternative hair removal treatments that pose no danger to the baby and to the mother. Some laser technicians and doctors may go ahead with the sessions especially if you had already started but it will not hurt to wait until you give birth and the baby is a few months old to be independent.
